Edwards was first diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2004. The cancer resurfaced in early in 2007, as John Edwards prepared to run for the White House. Both her and her husband argeed at the time they wouldn’t allow the cancer to derail his candidacy.

The Edwards family issued a statement Monday that said doctors have told Edwards that further treatment for her cancer would be unproductive.

Though many would expect donations be requested for breast cancer charity, the Edwards family is instead asking for the public to support the foundation created in honor of Edwards' son.

The foundation was started in 1996 to honor Wade, the Edwards' 16-year-old son who was killed in a car crash.

Funds given to the foundation support the Wade Edwards Learning Lab Raleigh, N.C. The lab produces resources to teens, including free after-school computer access.
